COACHES' CORNER

Coach: S1

My team had possession of the ball out of bounds on the baseline beneath our basket. One of my posts fouled trying to get position on the inbound pass. The other team was in bonus and went and shot the free throws. My question is whether or not that is a player control foul.>> Thanks.

Ruling: S1

No coach that is not a player control foul. "Neither team control nor player control exists during a try or tap for goal, throw-in, a jump ball or when the ball is in flight during a try or tap for a goal." In this play situation the officials handled the play correctly.

Question: When a player is given the ball at the free throw line, can he just throw it back to the ref if he wants to do more shot preparation? I have seen this called as a shot attempt, and I have seen the ref catch it and give it back to the shooter.

Ruling S2
Once the administering official bounces the ball to the free thrower it is placed at his/her disposal, when it is caught by the free thrower the ball becomes live. The official may call the ball back while it's at the free thrower disposal (during the bounce) to prevent a violation, but once the ball becomes live (caught by the free thrower) the only thing the free thrower can do is shoot or call time out, he/she can't bounce the ball back to the official. If the free thrower muffs the pass from the official and it rolls forward, the official should sound the whistle to prevent any violations and then start the free throw procedure again. If the free thrower accidentally allows the ball to deflect after catching it or bounces the ball back to the official a free throw violation should be called. Rule 8.1.1 and 9.1.3a, e
